Why I Made the Pocket Friends Activity Pack

There’s a quiet kind of magic that happens when children are given space to imagine — not instructions, not outcomes, just space.
The idea for the Pocket Friends activity pack came from watching my own kids sit at the table with a few markers and a blank character template. There was no rush to “do it right.” No pressure to stay in the lines. Just small hands, big ideas, and the freedom to decide who this little character might become.
One child gave their Pocket Friend bright purple feet and declared them a forest jumper. Another carefully added accessories, then stopped and stared for a moment — as if listening for the story before continuing.
That pause is what I wanted to protect.
Open-Ended Play Matters
So many activities tell children what to make and how it should look when it’s finished. I wanted this one to do the opposite.
The Pocket Friends pages are intentionally simple:
A soft, neutral character template
A pocket to decorate
A page of optional accessories
A blank background for their world
Nothing is required. Nothing is “wrong.”
Children can draw, cut, glue, color, or ignore parts entirely. They can tell a story or just enjoy the act of creating. The goal isn’t the final image — it’s the process of imagining.
Designed to Be Gentle
You might notice that the character outline is a light grey instead of bold black. That was a deliberate choice. It invites kids to draw over the character, not feel confined by it.
The accessories are simple and friendly, easy to cut out, and open to interpretation. A lantern can become a moon. A leaf can become a shield. A little buddy can become a companion on the journey.
This isn’t about filling in blanks — it’s about building a tiny world.
A Small Beginning
Pocket Friends is part of a growing collection at Imaginal Atelier focused on imagination, storytelling, and creative calm. It’s meant to be used slowly, revisited often, and enjoyed in whatever way feels right for your family.
If you’d like to try it with your own children, you can find the Pocket Friends Activity Pack as an instant digital download in the shop.
Thank you for being here — and for making space for imagination.
